Germany: Bürgergeld became "Grundsicherungsgeld" on 1 July 2026

On 1 July 2026, the basic income scheme for jobseekers (Bürgergeld) was replaced by the Grundsicherungsgeld (basic security benefits for jobseekers). The Federal Employment Agency says the reform puts job placement first and makes the duties to cooperate more binding.

What the Federal Employment Agency says about recipients

• Recipients do not need to do anything.
• Cash benefits are paid without interruption.
• Decisions already issued stay valid after 1 July 2026.
• New letters may still say "Bürgergeld". Forms, notices and letters are being updated in stages until the end of the year.
• Existing safeguards stay, for example for people with mental health conditions and for children in households.

What to tell clients

• If a letter or form says Bürgergeld or Grundsicherungsgeld, it is the same system for now. Check the date and the legal basis on the notice.
• Expect stricter cooperation duties with the Jobcenter. Clients should answer every invitation and deadline.
